Upgrades redemption

Before requesting your upgrade, take into consideration the following:

  • You can only request upgrades for tickets bought in certain classes; all participating Star Alliance carriers accept upgrades from Y, B, C and D classes.
  • You can only request an upgrade for up to 4 passengers and for up to 2 flight segments.
  • Upgrades are not allowed for reservations that contain Infants.
  • If you reservation contains Special Services, they might be lost when the upgrade is processed; please contact the operating airline in order to request them again.

Star Alliance Upgrade Awards Terms and Conditions

Upgrades are valid:
  • Only on participating Star Alliance carriers.
  • For the next higher cabin –from Economy to Business or from Business to First (if the aircraft has only two cabins and after Economy the next higher cabin is First, you may upgrade from Economy to First, depending on the operating carrier).
  • When the ticket is issued on the paid booking class; all participating Star Alliance carriers allow upgrades from C, D, Y, and B booking classes. There are carriers that allow upgrades from additional classes.
  • When the upgrade is requested at least 24 hours prior to flight departure.
  • When the itinerary is for four or less passengers and it does not contain infants.
Upgrades are not valid:
  • When the ticket is industry discount, agency discount, free, or award tickets.
  • A Business to First upgrade is not valid when you have already upgraded from Economy to Business.
  • When the ticket is issued by one airline but the flight is operated by another airline (codeshare flights).
Additional Conditions:
  • One award is required for each upgraded segment. The required mileage is per person, per flight segment.
  • Some carriers may have blackout periods or route restrictions where upgrade awards are not permitted.
  • Upgrades may be requested up to 300 days in advance (56 days in advance on ANA; 28 days in advance on Air New Zealand).
  • Seat assignments, special meals, and other special services must be requested through the operating airline.
  • Cancellation of an upgrade will result in the cancellation the entire flight segment.
  • Miles will be refunded when the upgrade is cancelled.
  • All Star Alliance Upgrade Awards are subject to the rules and policies of the operating carrier.
  • The mileage required for an upgrade is subject to change depending on the day of the request.
  • Miles will be accrued based on original class of service ticketed, not on upgraded class of service.
  • Stopovers are not permitted.
  • Waitlisting is not permitted.
  • Standby upgrades at the airport are not permitted.
  • Program rules are subject to change.
